Collaboration
In 2002, Texas housing leaders and low-income people came together to build a collaborative network dedicated to making more affordable homes available to Texas’ poor families. They started holding annual meetings that became known as the Texas Housing Forum. The Housing Forum’s premise is that affordable housing and quality neighborhoods will not become a priority unless a broad group of Texans who care deeply about these issues accept responsibility to find common ground, agree to work together, and provide leadership within the housing movement.

The forum consists of a balanced group of stakeholders that includes low-income people, the president of the National Association of Home Builders, the directors of state and local housing agencies, numerous low-income community leaders, the deputy mayors of three major cities, philanthropists, academics and housing advocates. The Housing Forum recently launched the first affordable housing public awareness campaign in Texas, “Housing Texas”. The campaign plans to use public education, awareness, and outreach to achieve the following goals:

  1.   Significantly increase investment in a state housing trust fund that will make more quality, affordable homes available and expand self-help housing programs;
  2.   Demonstrate better management of housing programs that highlight the best design, construction, and management of affordable homes;
  3.   Address community concerns that prevent the development of affordable neighborhoods; and
  4.   Promote innovative and successful programs that build public confidence.
